The Westchester Alliance of Back School Educators (WABSE) partners with the City School District of New Rochelle and community organizations to produce a Black History Month celebration every year, at New Rochelle High School.
We are excited to be planning the 11th Annual event “Celebrating the Harlem Renaissance” and it will be in-person once again!
This celebration is the largest community event hosted at New Rochelle highschool every year and includes the participation and work of CSDNR students of all ages.
From 3:00-6:30pm, the afternoon will commence with a dynamic Spoken Word and Art exhibition of student work from elementary, middle and high school, in the Rotunda, outside of the Whitney M. Young Auditorium.
Come and enjoy local food from Suggaplums, Ray’s Empanadas, Andrea’s Kitchen and Chef El Amin.
Come visit and purchase the latest books from local authors Nicole Allen, Linsey Davis, Michael Eaddy, Virginia Krebs, Kent Washington, Luis Quiros and other selections from bookseller, The Humble Bumble.
Come checkout handmade wares by local artisans, take media wall photos, with Harlem Renaissance era accessories and enjoy face painting.
Come swing dance with the Harlem Swing Dance Society and visit the “Cotton Club Cafe” with the New Rochelle High School Jazz Band.
From 5:00-6:30pm attendees are invited to enjoy an evening of rich, performing arts in the auditorium. $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
Enjoy musical interludes with DJSMITHYBOY.
Enjoy students performing song, spoken word and dance, including residency participants with the Harlem Swing Dance Society.
Honor high achieving NRHS, ALMS and IEYMS students and City Court Judge Jared Rice.
